Getting to know Michelle Tegenkamp MS, RD, LD…

Where did you do your undergrad and internship?

I did my undergrad at Michigan State University and got a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetic and a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology. After that I completed a Masters of Science at the University of Wisconsin – Madison in Nutritional Sciences and then completed my internship at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics.

Tell us about your practice.

I have a private practice Active Nutrition LLC where I work with a lot of athletes and active people of all ages and do a lot of wellness nutrition. I also work part-time at OHSU as an outpatient RD working with a wide variety of patients ranging from Cystic Fibrosis to weight loss and those undergoing weight loss surgery as well as other medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension or  high cholesterol. I also do some inpatient work at OHSU, mostly on the abdominal transplant floor.

What inspired you to become a dietitian?

I think being an athlete throughout high school and college was my biggest motivation. I was very interested in health overall and how proper nutrition could fuel the body to make you a better athlete.

Getting to know Michelle…

How did you end up in Portland?

We re-located to Portland from the mid-west for my husbands career.

Do you enjoy cooking?  Have you discovered a favorite recipe recently?

The majority of the cooking I’ve done over the past 6 months has been making baby food for my son but my husband and I do really enjoy cooking. I tend to be the one following the recipe exactly as stated while he’ll often wing it.

What keeps your life balanced?

Definitely my family, I have a 14 month old son and he’s at such a fun age! I love to spend anytime I’m not working hanging out with him and my husband. For me it’s also important to stay active and I enjoy quality time catching up with friends on runs.

In regards to a balanced life, who inspires you most?

Again, definitely family. My parents both worked full time and taught us the importance of hard work but were also there to support us, cheer us on and encourage us. I hope my children will be able to say the same thing.

What websites to do frequently visit for fun?

We live pretty far from both our families and a lot of our friends so my free time on the internet is usually spent on facebook and updating our family website with pictures of our son.
